ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Pashiz (Bronze, 25 mm, 1.74 g, 3 h), Arab-Sasanian type, WYHC (Weh-az-Amid-Kawād = Arrajān), illegible date. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘plhwyh / [W] plwcyh’, i.e. ‘frāxīh ud pērōzīh’ (‘prosperity and victory’ in Pahlavi); in the margin, ‘Muḥammad rasūl Allāh wa alladhīna āmanū maʿahū ashiddāʾ ʿalā al-kuffār ruḥamāʾ baynahum’ (‘Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who believed with him are hard against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; to left, illegible date in Pahlavi; to right, WYHC (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Zeno-272010 (this coin). Extremely rare.
